SLPA Field Work Hours

If you are on a journey to become a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, you might be familiar with the SLPA fieldwork hours. Depending on where you are in your journey, you might want to start thinking about where you will complete your hours.

SLPA Education Requirements

For those of you who are not familiar with this, let me explain. In order to become a licensed Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA), you need to complete either an Associate’s degree in Speech Pathology or a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Some degree programs may already include the SLPA program, while others may require you to find an accredited program separately. SLPA Field Work Requirements

During your SLPA program, you are required to complete 70-120 hours of clinical fieldwork. The SLPA field work hours must be completed under the direct supervision of a speech-language pathologist and consist of observation and direct therapy hours.

As a future SLPA, you will want to complete your hours in a setting that you ideally would like to work in once you are licensed. For instance, if you aspire to work in a private practice, it would be advantageous to complete your hours in a private practice setting to gain experience and familiarity with the environment and processes. Some of the most common settings are schools, private practices, hospitals, and home health.

Finding a suitable placement can be challenging at times. Depending on your program, you may be required to complete your hours while completing your associates or bachelors degree or at a later time. In both situations, finding a placement that will give you the experience and knowledge you need to be a successful clinician when starting your career can be challenging.
